{"id":26,"date":"2012-07-13T19:58:52","date_gmt":"2012-07-13T19:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/myarlington.org\/wordpress\/?p=26"},"modified":"2012-09-12T16:25:53","modified_gmt":"2012-09-12T20:25:53","slug":"ju-starts-two-new-schools","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/myarlington.org\/?p=26","title":{"rendered":"JU Offering Two New Colleges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jacksonville University is offering two colleges in the\u00a0fall: \u00a0the College of Health Sciences and College of Interdisciplinary and Professional Studies.<\/p>\n<p>Both colleges plan to increase the number of degrees offered at JU, allowing students more options to study fields in growing areas of demand, said Lois Becker, senior vice president for academic affairs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-42\" title=\"jacksonville_university\" src=\"http:\/\/myarlington.org\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/jacksonville_university-228x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"228\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/myarlington.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/jacksonville_university-228x300.jpg 228w, http:\/\/myarlington.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/07\/jacksonville_university.jpg 380w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 228px) 100vw, 228px\" \/>Additional courses are being developed and faculty will be hired to accommodate the growth of the degrees, she said.<\/p>\n<p>With passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2010, health care systems are transforming, both in the way care is delivered and in how health professionals are educated.<\/p>\n<p>As the law adds millions of insured people to the health care delivery system, workforce demand for all health disciplines is increasing dramatically.<\/p>\n<p>Judith Erickson, dean of the School of Nursing, called the expansion a natural progression to meet the demands of health care organizations serving a changing and aging population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing more and more students greatly interested in these fields as demands grow and change in Northeast Florida and beyond,\u201d she said. \u201cThis allows us to position ourselves well by offering more degrees, such as in speechpathology and health information technology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Universities nationwide\u00a0are developing interdisciplinary degrees at an increasing rate.<\/p>\n<p>JU is offering or considering at least two interdisciplinary degrees.\u00a0 Interdisciplinary courses in the Sustainability program include various subject areas taught by\u00a0the university&#8217;s faculty\u00a0in sociology, mathematics, statistics, business, philosophy, economics, management, law, ethics and other subjects.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, a Public Policy degree proposal is being developed\u00a0with a target of the fall of 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The College of Interdisciplinary and Professional Studies will provide an administrative home to these degrees, plus a dean to coordinate efforts.<\/p>\n<p>It will be located on the first floor of the Davis College of Business.
